Plan a trip through TehranTehran is long, and where you sleep decides how much of your day you spend in traffic. The north — Saadat Abad, Vanak, Tajrish — is greener, cooler in summer and where most of the newer four- and five-star hotels are; it is also furthest from the historic centre, and the metro is usually faster than a car. The centre, around Valiasr and Ferdowsi, puts you within walking distance of the museums, the embassies and the older mid-range hotels, at the cost of noise. The south, near the Grand Bazaar and the Golestan Palace, is where the city's oldest fabric and its cheapest beds are, and it empties out at night.
If you are in Tehran for one or two nights before flying on, stay near a metro line on Line 1 — it runs north to south and will save you more time than any upgrade in hotel class.
