Zanjan
City of knives, filigree and the world's mightiest brick dome
8 highlights · tap a pinZanjan is a highland city in northwestern Iran, sitting around 1,650 m on the old Tehran–Tabriz road, long famous as Iran's premier handicraft town for hand-forged knives, charoogh leather footwear and delicate malileh (silver filigree) work. Its arteries are the vast Qajar-era covered bazaar and a cluster of converted heritage buildings — the 1928 Rakhtshooykhaneh laundry house turned Anthropology Museum, and the Zolfaghari mansion housing the eerily preserved Chehrabad Saltmen. Above all it is the gateway to Soltaniyeh, whose colossal turquoise dome — the mausoleum of Ilkhanid ruler Oljaytu — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest brick domes ever built.
