Shush (ancient Susa) is one of the oldest cities on Earth — a great capital of the Elamite, Achaemenid and Parthian worlds on the Khuzestan plain. Its UNESCO-listed mounds hold the Apadana palace of Darius the Great, layered ruins spanning millennia, the revered Tomb of Daniel with its distinctive white sugarloaf cone, and a 19th-century French archaeological 'castle'.
