Sarein (also Sareyn) is a small thermal-spa resort town in Ardabil Province, set roughly 25-28 km southwest of Ardabil city at the foot of Mount Sabalan, Iran's third-highest peak and a dormant volcano whose geothermal heat feeds the town's springs. It is Iran's premier hydrotherapy destination, with around seven major hot springs plus the Sabalan complex billed as the largest hydrotherapy center in the Middle East, drawing sulfur- and mineral-rich waters used for joint, skin and rheumatic ailments. Though a year-round resident population of only a few thousand, the town swells past 20,000 in summer as domestic tourists pour in for the waters and cool mountain climate. The surrounding Sabalan highlands add skiing at Alvares, summit climbs to a crater lake, rocky troglodyte villages and waterfalls.

    Gavmish Goli Hot Spring

Sarein's most abundant mineral spring, with a deep open bathing pool. The largest-flow hot spring in town; sour, colorless, faintly fragrant water around 46 C, rich in bicarbonate, chloride, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium, prized for rheumatic and heart-related therapy.

Dormant volcano, Iran's third-highest peak (4,811 m), with a crater lake at the summit. The geothermal engine behind Sarein's springs; a major climbing objective with a turquoise summit crater lake and the eagle-shaped 'Eagle Rock', accessed via routes from Alvares and Shabil.

  4. 4

    Alvares Ski Resort

One of Iran's largest ski resorts on Sabalan's southern flank. Sits at about 3,200 m with a long season (open much of the year), serves as a southern launch point for Sabalan ascents, and is roughly a 30 km drive from Sarein on asphalt road.

  5. 5

    Sari Su Hot Spring

Central Sarein spring with distinctive pistachio-green, sour water. One of the town's most popular springs, roughly 47 C at the source (about 44 C in the pools), valued for mineral therapy.
