Neyshabur, an ancient Silk Road city in Khorasan, is the resting place of two immortal Persians — the poet-astronomer Omar Khayyam, under a soaring modern lattice canopy, and the mystic poet Attar. Long a centre of learning and ceramics, it is also the home of Iran's famed turquoise (firouzeh), mined in the mountains nearby. Gardens, tombs and the wood-domed mausoleum of the painter Kamal-ol-Molk make it a serene literary detour from Mashhad.
