Natanz is a small, high-altitude town (about 1,666 m) on the slopes of the Karkas range in northern Isfahan province, long famous for its bracing climate, terraced fruit orchards and prized pears. Its heritage centerpiece is the early-14th-century Jameh Mosque complex built around the Sufi shrine of Sheikh Abd al-Samad al-Isfahani, one of the most refined surviving ensembles of Mongol Ilkhanid architecture in Iran. The surrounding district holds adobe mountain villages (above all Abyaneh), a Sasanian fire temple, Safavid caravanserais and one of the world's oldest copper-smelting sites at Arisman. Today Natanz pairs serene orchard-and-mountain scenery with deep layers of Zoroastrian, Sufi and Persian Islamic history.
