Kandovan is a still-inhabited troglodyte village in the foothills of Mount Sahand, near Osku in East Azerbaijan, where homes called "karaan" are hand-carved into cone-shaped pinnacles of volcanic ash-flow tuff. Often compared to Cappadocia in Turkey, it is celebrated as one of the very few rock-hewn villages on Earth where people continue to live their traditional life inside the rock. The cones formed from ignimbrite ejected by the now-dormant Sahand volcano and sculpted over millennia by erosion, with multi-storey dwellings stacked livestock-below, family-above. In 2023 it became Iran's first village named to the UN Tourism (UNWTO) Best Tourism Villages list.

Top places to see

  1. 1

    Carved Cone Dwellings (Karaan)

The hand-hewn beehive houses that are the village itself. Multi-storey homes carved straight into volcanic tuff cones, still lived in — among the only inhabited rock villages in the world; some cones reach 30-40 m.

  2. 2

    Kandovan River and Mineral Spring

Stream running through the village fed by a famed local spring. The river and its spring water (reputed for mineral/medicinal qualities) shaped the village setting and offer the classic riverside viewpoint of the cones.

  3. 3

    Laleh Kandovan Rocky Hotel

Cave-style boutique hotel carved into the cliff. One of very few troglodyte hotels in the world; even non-guests visit its terrace and cafe for the village panorama and the inside-the-rock experience.

  4. 4

    Honey House (Asal Sara Kandovan)

Local honey production and tasting. Bees feed on high-altitude Sahand wildflowers, producing prized honey that is one of the village's signature products and souvenirs.

  5. 5

Village Bazaar Lanes and Handicraft Stalls

Lane-side stalls selling honey, dried fruit, herbs and kilims. Best place to buy local goods directly from residents — handwoven kilims, walnuts, dried fruit, medicinal herbs and honey.

  6. 6

Mount Sahand Foothills and Hiking Trails

Unmarked trails up the volcanic massif above the village. Sahand is one of Iran's highest volcanic ranges; the slopes above Kandovan offer trekking, wildflower meadows and reputed hot springs (best with a local guide).

  7. 7

    Hilevar (Hillevar) Ruins

Nearby older settlement linked to Kandovan's founding legend. Tradition ties Kandovan's settlers to this neighbouring village; a short detour for those interested in the area's history.
