Iran's Armenian frontier — UNESCO monasteries in a red-rock canyon on the Aras
8 highlights · tap a pinJolfa is a small border town on the southern bank of the Aras River in East Azerbaijan Province, facing the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan across the water. Its fame rests on the surrounding Armenian Christian heritage: St Stepanos Monastery, set in a dramatic canyon 15 km northwest of town, and the nearby Chapel of Chupan are part of the "Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran," inscribed by UNESCO in 2008 alongside St Thaddeus and the Chapel of Dzordzor. The Aras river valley is also a designated UNESCO Global Geopark, and the town today doubles as the Aras Free Zone trade gateway, blending pilgrimage, geology and bazaar bustle.
