Jolfa is a small border town on the southern bank of the Aras River in East Azerbaijan Province, facing the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan across the water. Its fame rests on the surrounding Armenian Christian heritage: St Stepanos Monastery, set in a dramatic canyon 15 km northwest of town, and the nearby Chapel of Chupan are part of the "Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran," inscribed by UNESCO in 2008 alongside St Thaddeus and the Chapel of Dzordzor. The Aras river valley is also a designated UNESCO Global Geopark, and the town today doubles as the Aras Free Zone trade gateway, blending pilgrimage, geology and bazaar bustle.

    St Stepanos Monastery (Maghardavank)

    UNESCO 2008

    11th-century Armenian monastery in a deep Aras-river canyon, the centerpiece of the UNESCO ensemble. The second-most important Armenian religious site in Iran after St Thaddeus; renowned for its carved khachkar-rich stonework, ribbed dome, bell tower and dramatic gorge setting. Part of the 2008 UNESCO World Heritage inscription.

    UNESCO 2008

    Small 16th-century domed chapel perched above the Aras, near St Stepanos. A delicate stone chapel built for Armenian shepherds of the Sham Valley, with a commanding view over the Aras River; counted within the St Stepanos component of the UNESCO Armenian Monastic Ensembles.

    Chapel of Dzordzor (Zorzor)

    UNESCO 2008

    14th-century chapel, relocated stone-by-stone in 1987-88 to escape dam flooding. Built by Bishop Zachariah in 1314 in the Makuchay River valley; the third UNESCO component of the Armenian Monastic Ensembles, famous for being dismantled and reassembled upstream (only ~250 of 1,500 stones are new). Lies in the Maku/Chaldoran area, a long but rewarding side trip from Jolfa.

    Khajeh Nazar Caravanserai

    Safavid-era roadside caravanserai by the Aras, now a restored teahouse. One of the network of caravanserais attributed to the era of Shah Abbas the Great, set beside the Aras River and the Zia-ol-Molk bridge; a restored brick complex with an atmospheric tea/coffee house. Note: a popular tourism site, but not itself a UNESCO-listed property.

    Kordasht Bath & Qajar complex

    Qajar-era subterranean bathhouse and castle complex attributed to Abbas Mirza. An elegant underground hammam with carved stone basins, part of a larger Kordasht complex (bath, emirate building, military depot, castle) linked to Crown Prince Abbas Mirza of the Qajar dynasty; in a riverside village near Jolfa.
