Hengam is a small (~33 sq km) island in the Persian Gulf lying about 2 km south of Qeshm, within the Qeshm Island UNESCO Global Geopark. It is best known for the pods of wild dolphins that swim alongside boats from autumn through spring, the mica-flecked "Silver Beach" that glitters in sunlight, and the weathered remains of Portuguese and later British (English) naval presence around Naderi port. A scattering of fishing villages, palm groves, mangrove channels nearby, and roaming Persian gazelles round out a wild, low-development island that visitors reach by boat from Qeshm.

Top places to see

  1. 1

    Dolphin-watching boat tour

Wild dolphins swim and leap beside boats in the channel between Qeshm and Hengam. Hengam's signature draw; pods regularly approach boats from mid-autumn to late spring, best at dawn (~8 a.m.) in Nov-Dec.

  2. 2

    Silver Beach (glittering sands)

A shoreline of mica-rich sand that shimmers silver in sunlight. One of Iran's most unusual beaches; access has been restricted to protect the fragile sand, so it is often best admired from a boat.

  3. 3

Naderi Port & Portuguese ruins / fort

Weathered ruins linked to Portuguese (and later British) presence near the island's port. Tangible trace of the island's 16th-17th c. Portuguese era and later European naval history; vantage point for sunset over village and Gulf.

  4. 4

    Portuguese shipwreck

A partly sunken historic vessel visible from the shore. A photogenic, ghostly relic that anchors the island's colonial-era story.

  5. 5

    Old Hengam (Hengam-e Qadim) village

Traditional fishing village with a small local bazaar and intact folk culture. Window into Bandari fishing life, handicrafts and the spiritual Zar ritual culture of the southern islands.

  6. 6

    Local handicraft bazaar

Stalls selling seashell jewellery, palm-fibre baskets and embroidery. Best place to buy island-made souvenirs directly from villagers and meet locals.

  7. 7

Snorkeling over coral & natural aquarium

Clear waters with colourful tropical fish and coral patches. Hengam sits near the boundary of Gulf ecosystems, giving rich marine life for snorkeling and diving.

  8. 8

    Persian gazelle / wildlife sightings

Free-roaming gazelles and deer on the island's scrubland. Rare chance to see Persian gazelles in a low-development island setting alongside marine wildlife.

  9. 9

    Sea turtle nesting beaches

Beaches where sea turtles are seen and nest seasonally. Adds to the island's reputation as a marine-life hotspot beyond dolphins.

  10. 10

    Bioluminescent shoreline (night)

Phytoplankton make the surf glow blue on dark nights. A magical after-dark phenomenon for those who overnight near the shore.
