Ardabil
Safavid cradle of mystics, carpets and volcanic hot springs
8 highlights · tap a pinArdabil, capital of Iran's northwestern Ardabil Province near the Azerbaijan border, is the ancestral home of the Safavid dynasty and one of Iran's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Its crown jewel is the UNESCO-listed Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble, a Sufi sanctuary built around the tomb of the order's founder whose descendants would rule Iran. Sitting on a high cold plateau beneath the volcanic massif of Mount Sabalan, the city pairs Safavid-era heritage and a famed carpet-weaving tradition with thermal-spring resorts, alpine lakes and forests on its doorstep.
