Do I Need Travel Insurance for an Iran Visa?

Last verified: 2026-08-01

Yes — insurance covering Iran is required for the visa, and has been since May 2024. But the advice you will read almost everywhere else, that foreign policies are refused, does not match what we see at the border: a policy that explicitly names Iran is accepted. If you arrive without cover you buy it at the passport-control desk, which we have never found closed. Budget separately for the visa fee itself — around €75 in cash at that same desk — because that is the charge most travellers mistake for the insurance.

Key things to know

  • Insurance covering Iran is mandatory for the visa — required since May 2024.
  • A foreign policy IS accepted, as long as the document explicitly names Iran — contrary to most advice online.
  • Make sure it says Iran, not just “Asia” or “Middle East” — a region is not the country.
  • Arriving with no cover is not a crisis: you buy it at the passport-control desk, and we have never found that desk unavailable.
  • The cash charge at that desk is the visa fee (around €75 — confirm for your nationality), which is a separate thing from the insurance people expect it to be.
  • We can arrange Iran-valid cover as part of your paperwork; the price depends on the trip, so we quote it with your itinerary.
