Tus, just northwest of Mashhad, is the ancient city that gave Iran its greatest poet — Ferdowsi, author of the Shahnameh. His grand tomb here is a place of national pilgrimage, set in gardens beside the lonely brick Harunieh dome and the eroded ramparts of the once-great medieval city, destroyed by the Mongols. A short trip from Mashhad, it is the spiritual home of the Persian language.
