Two rooms only, in the Bastan lanes off Alavi Street in the old quarter. One is a capsule single, a sleeping berth rather than a room, and it has no private bathroom or toilet; the other is an ordinary double. Priced and built for someone passing through on their own.

Nine rooms in Boostani alley off Molla Habibollah Sharif Street, each with its own bathroom, sleeping one to six. A family of six fits in a single room, which is unusual here.

Quadruple

A house in the alley beside the Agha Bozorg mosque and madrasa, one of the finest eighteenth-century buildings in the city. Ten room types split between the ground floor and the basement, and three of them, two singles and a double, have no private bathroom or toilet. The basement rooms are the cool ones in summer.

Alongside private rooms there are dormitories sleeping eight, ten and twelve, with separate women's and men's rooms; some share bathrooms and some have their own. Four rooms in an alley off Bid Abadi Street, in the quarter named after the Ali Qoli Aqa mosque and its eighteenth-century bathhouse. Two of the four, one in the basement and one at ground level, share a bathroom and toilet; the other two do not. Small and plain, and genuinely in the old town.

Five rooms on Masjed Seyyed Street by the Saderat bank corner, a working stretch of the old town north of the bazaar. One of the twins has no window, which is worth asking about when you book; the rest run from a single up to a four-bed.

Opposite the Hazrat Zeynab shrine, in a cul-de-sac off the shrine street and well away from the tourist axis. Four room types, all of them for three or four people and sold in numbered grades from one to four, with a VIP one-bedroom suite at the top. There are no singles or doubles here at all.

Five rooms in the clinic alley off Enghelab Street, every one of them sold in the economy grade, from a single up to a triple. This is a budget address without pretence, and the room names say so.

Ten rooms in Keyvan alley off Seyed Gol Sorkh Street, with an economy grade, sleeping one to four. Its name is the four qanats, the underground channels that made a city possible in this desert.

A hostel as much as a hotel, in the Ershad alley off Enghelab Street. Alongside private rooms named for poets, Hafez, Attar, Molana, Shahriar, there are shared dormitories, a women's room and a six-bed men's room, which makes it one of the cheapest and most sociable beds in the city.
