Mashhad – „Ort des Martyriums“ – ist Irans zweitgrößte und zugleich heiligste Stadt, gelegen im nordöstlichen Khorasan an der alten Seidenstraße. Sie wuchs um den Schrein von Imam Reza, des achten schiitischen Imams, heute die weitläufige Anlage Haram-e Razavi, die mehr Pilger anzieht als nahezu jeder andere Ort der islamischen Welt.
