7 Highlights · tippen Sie auf einen PunktKandovan ist ein bis heute bewohntes Höhlendorf in den Ausläufern des Sahand, nahe Osku in Ost-Aserbaidschan, wo die „Karaan“ genannten Wohnungen von Hand in kegelförmige Felstürme aus vulkanischem Aschentuff geschlagen wurden. Häufig mit Kappadokien in der Türkei verglichen, gilt es als eines der ganz wenigen Felsendörfer der Erde, in denen die Menschen ihr traditionelles Leben im Inneren des Gesteins fortführen. Die Kegel entstanden aus Ignimbrit, das der heute ruhende Vulkan Sahand ausgeworfen hat und das über Jahrtausende durch Erosion geformt wurde; die mehrstöckigen Behausungen sind so gestapelt, dass unten das Vieh und darüber die Familie untergebracht ist. 2023 wurde Kandovan als erstes Dorf Irans in die Liste der Best Tourism Villages von UN Tourism (UNWTO) aufgenommen.

Carved Cone Dwellings (Karaan)
The hand-hewn beehive houses that are the village itself. Multi-storey homes carved straight into volcanic tuff cones, still lived in — among the only inhabited rock villages in the world; some cones reach 30-40 m.

Stream running through the village fed by a famed local spring. The river and its spring water (reputed for mineral/medicinal qualities) shaped the village setting and offer the classic riverside viewpoint of the cones.

Cave-style boutique hotel carved into the cliff. One of very few troglodyte hotels in the world; even non-guests visit its terrace and cafe for the village panorama and the inside-the-rock experience.

Local honey production and tasting. Bees feed on high-altitude Sahand wildflowers, producing prized honey that is one of the village's signature products and souvenirs.

Unmarked trails up the volcanic massif above the village. Sahand is one of Iran's highest volcanic ranges; the slopes above Kandovan offer trekking, wildflower meadows and reputed hot springs (best with a local guide).
