Es handelt sich um biologische Relikte der arkto-tertiären Wälder, die vor 25-50 Millionen Jahren weite Teile der Nordhalbkugel bedeckten und die Eiszeiten des Quartärs dank der ausgleichenden Feuchtigkeit des Kaspischen Meeres überdauerten. Der 2019 von der UNESCO als Weltnaturerbe eingeschriebene Wald beherbergt endemische und reliktische Baumarten wie den Persischen Eisenholzbaum (Parrotia persica), die Kaspische Zelkove und die Kaukasische Flügelnuss sowie Leitarten der Tierwelt wie den Persischen Leoparden und den Braunbären. Für Besucher reicht das Erlebnis von den wolkenverhangenen Bergkämmen von Abr und Alimestan bis zum abgeschiedenen Wildschutzgebiet des Golestan-Nationalparks.

Abr (Cloud) Forest, Shahroud
Famed 'sea of clouds' forest where mist pools below ridge-top trees, ~45 km northeast of Shahroud. Iran's most iconic cloud-inversion landscape; one of the oldest remnants of the Hyrcanian belt, a magnet for campers, hikers and photographers chasing the ocean-of-clouds phenomenon.

Alimestan Forest
