Bam ist eine Wüstenoasenstadt in der südöstlichen Provinz Kerman, berühmt für Arg-e Bam, das größte Lehmziegelbauwerk (Adobe) der Erde, dessen Ursprünge mindestens bis in die achämenidische Zeit zurückreichen und das zwischen dem 7. und 11. Jahrhundert als Knotenpunkt der Seidenstraße blühte. Am 26. Dezember 2003 legte ein katastrophales Erdbeben die Zitadelle und den größten Teil der Stadt in Schutt und Asche und tötete Zehntausende; der mühevolle internationale Wiederaufbau, der darauf folgte, hat die wiedererrichtete Zitadelle selbst zu einer Geschichte der Widerstandskraft gemacht. Getragen von einem alten Qanat-Netz (unterirdische Wasserkanäle), ist Bam von Dattelpalmen- und Zitrushainen umgeben und für seine weichen Mazafati-Datteln bekannt. Zusammen mit der umgebenden Oase und der von Erdbebenverwerfungen geprägten Landschaft bildet die Stadt die 2004 eingeschriebene UNESCO-Welterbestätte „Bam und seine Kulturlandschaft“.
