Damghan, a venerable town on the old Khorasan road at the desert's edge, holds some of Iran's oldest Islamic architecture — the Tarikhaneh, often called the country's oldest mosque, a stark hall of round brick arches on a Sasanian plan — alongside graceful Seljuk tomb towers and minarets. Nearby, the prehistoric mound of Tappeh Hesar reaches back 5,000 years. Quiet and deeply historic, it rewards lovers of early Persian architecture.
