Sanandaj, capital of Kurdistan province in the western Zagros, is the cultural heart of Iranian Kurdistan — a UNESCO Creative City of Music (2019) famed for the daf drum and Kurdish song. Set in a mountain bowl below Abidar park, it keeps handsome Qajar mansions (the Asef Vaziri 'House of Kurds' and Khosro Abad), a traditional bazaar, and a warm Kurdish culture of dress, food and hospitality — and is the gateway to the Hawraman villages.
