Ramsar is the elegant jewel of Iran's Caspian coast, where the forested Alborz tumbles to the sea in green, humid Mazandaran. A 1930s royal resort, it keeps a graceful air — Reza Shah's white Marble (Marmar) Palace, the historic Grand Hotel, and Iran's largest cable car climbing from beach to forest. The city gave its name to the 1971 Ramsar Convention on wetlands. Mild, lush and scenic, it's a favourite seaside escape and a gateway to the Hyrcanian forests.
