Hamadan, set 1,850 m high beneath Mount Alvand, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities — the ancient Ecbatana (Hegmataneh), capital of the Medes and a summer capital of later empires. It pairs deep antiquity (the Achaemenid Ganjnameh inscriptions, the Esther and Mordechai shrine, the millennia-old stone lion) with the dignified tomb of Avicenna, the great physician-philosopher, and serves as the gateway to the Ali-Sadr water cave.
