Gorgan, capital of Golestan, sits where the Hyrcanian forest meets the steppe of the Turkmen Sahra — an ancient city (the old Astarabad) of brick-and-timber houses, a lively bazaar, and the cool Naharkhoran forest park on its edge. It is the gateway to Golestan National Park (Iran's oldest), the Caspian, the Turkmen plains, and the nearby Great Wall of Gorgan, one of the longest ancient defensive walls in the world.
