Dezful, on the Dez river in northern Khuzestan, is an atmospheric old town famous for its labyrinthine historic core of brick alleys and its shavadoons — underground living spaces dug beneath the houses to escape the ferocious summer heat. It guards one of the world's oldest bridges still in use (Sasanian foundations) and is a gateway to the region's ancient sites and the Dez gorge. Its name means 'fortress of the bridge'.
