Chogha Zanbil is the magnificent ruined ziggurat of the Elamite city of Dur-Untash, built around 1250 BCE by King Untash-Napirisha — the best-preserved ziggurat in the world and one of the few outside Mesopotamia. Iran's first UNESCO World Heritage site (1979), it rises in mud-brick tiers from the Khuzestan plain near Susa, still bearing cuneiform-stamped bricks and ancient water channels.
