Sari, capital of Mazandaran, is the largest city of the central Caspian region — an old, green provincial hub, more workaday than touristy but a useful base for the coast, the Hyrcanian forests and the famous Badab-e Surt terraces. Its centre keeps a leafy clock-tower square, historic shrines and brick tomb towers, with the lush Alborz forests rising behind and Caspian beaches a short drive north.
