Hawraman (Uramanat) is a breathtaking cultural landscape of terraced Kurdish villages in the high Zagros along the Iraq border, shared by Kurdistan and Kermanshah provinces — inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021. Stone houses climb so steeply that each roof forms the courtyard of the home above, home to the agropastoral Hawrami people who have farmed these slopes for some 5,000 years and speak their own Hawrami Kurdish. Villages like Uraman Takht and Palangan, ancient trails and the Pir Shaliar ceremony make it one of Iran's most atmospheric regions.
