Bandar-e Anzali is the busiest port on Iran's Caspian coast and the gateway to the Anzali Lagoon — a vast, lotus-strewn wetland of international importance, alive with migratory birds and explored by boat. A humid, green Gilani city split by a tidal channel and spanned by its landmark bridge, it mixes Russian-era and Pahlavi architecture, a lively fish market, beaches and a free-trade zone. The lagoon at dawn or dusk is the highlight.
