Ahvaz, capital of Khuzestan in Iran's hot southwest, is the 'city of bridges' — strung along the Karun, Iran's only navigable river, which splits the city in two and lights up at night. A sweltering industrial and cultural hub with a distinctive Arab-Iranian Khuzestani character, riverside parks and late-night cafes, it is for most travellers the gateway to the ancient sites of Susa, Chogha Zanbil and Shushtar.
